<span style="font-size: 14px;"><b>It has been a while, but today the Zagatti collection, the most famous whisky collection in the world has arrived in the Dutch town of Sassenheim, not far from Amsterdam. Scotch Whisky International, the company of CEO Michel Kappen, specialized in<a href="http://worldwhiskyindex.com/" target="_blank"> whisky investment</a> has added the last bottle to the collection today. A stunning total of 3.103 very rare bottles made the trip from Italy to the Netherlands.</b></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14px;">The collection is the life work of the now 81 year old Italian Valantino Zagatti, who was never able to really see the bottles himself. This never stopped him from collecting (malt) whisky and he is very keen to share his passion and work with the rest of the world. His books "The Best Collection of Malt - Volume I & II" are the only books in the world handling about single malt whisky. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14px;">For us whisky geeks and freaks it is wonderful to have this collection in our own small country. You will see bottles you have never seen before, so old and so rare. What about Parkmore? There are four bottles in the collection. Looking forward to the opening of the museum in 2016. Whiskytips will be there.</span><br />

<div dir="ltr" style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8000001907349px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 1; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">It was founded in 1790 and is still in production today.</span></span></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8000001907349px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 1; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">They seem to be working under the radar, but lately more and more people have discovered the almost crafty whisky that is coming from this distillery. Balblair even featured in the much acclaimed 2012 film "The Angels' Share".</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Unlike other distilleries Balblair insists on printing the vintage year on the label, as well as the bottling year. <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">So we tried the 2003 vintage, bottled in 2014 which means it is 10 or 11 years old. <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;">Koval is a young American distillery, founded in 2008 in Chicago.</span></span></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 12.8px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 1; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 12.8px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 1; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;">We can cite a lot more interesting stuff from their website, but why don't you just <a href="http://www.koval-distillery.com/newsite/" target="_blank">have a look</a> yourself?</span></span></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 12.8px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 1; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;">Most important is they produce more than just whiskey, they are not afraid to experiment and most importantly, try to produce organic spirits with local producers. We like that from a whiskey perspective, but also from an economic perspective. Interesting drinks, more jobs. If you want to argue, there's a comment section at the bottom, but we recommend you read Beyond Outrage, by Robert B. Reich first.</span></span></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 12.8px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 1; word-spacing: 0px;">

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;">So, <span style="font-family: inherit;">a</span> good thing is Koval is available in Europe<span style="font-family: inherit;">;</span> a company called <a href="http://newsite.haromex.com/" target="_blank">Haromex</a> has the common sense to import this stuff.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">K<span style="font-family: inherit;">oval</span> Millet</span> came in a 50 ml bottle, which makes you calculate how much you actually pay for a normal 0,7 litre bottle. Let's say it's affordable. We tasted a bottle from cask no. 671 and made of 100% millet, bottled at 40%. </span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;">Millet in The Netherlands is used amongst other things for making porridge. Wonder how we grow so tall and get so old folks? Its millet and kale.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;">Furthermore, it doesn't contain any gluten, so for those who are gluten intolerant: here's your drink. The grains are small and so is the yield, that's probably the reason why big distilleries would never use it. So cheerz to Koval for this alone.</span></span></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 12.8px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 1; word-spacing: 0px;">

John Dewar and Sons, it is now time to taste the renewed Aberfeldy 12 YO, number three in the <a href="http://www.lastgreatmalts.com/" target="_blank">Last Great Malt Series</a>.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFryabjwkX3y9C0YaIWo4OaFziqF8wFTbxWfaPkbH2LZE-sT6T3R2Dy2rkTLHY1SlNoTCFmdCPnAvHeFlcqVmSoL6M3pAJf1l2_2o9zfWHCUsQq5CobMCN7if0cmh-Zp7zJByH7sU0vP0/s1600/20150417_132855.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFryabjwkX3y9C0YaIWo4OaFziqF8wFTbxWfaPkbH2LZE-sT6T3R2Dy2rkTLHY1SlNoTCFmdCPnAvHeFlcqVmSoL6M3pAJf1l2_2o9zfWHCUsQq5CobMCN7if0cmh-Zp7zJByH7sU0vP0/s320/20150417_132855.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span> <span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The packaging is modernized, which is sort of funny, since it refers a lot more than the old packaging to the history of the distillery. In fact, there's so much on the label, that you need at least one dram to read it all. Smart, very smart guys.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">It also says "Limited bottling" on the label, we're not quite sure what that means. Maybe part of the general whisky vocabulary, with words like "select reserve", "special blend", "deluxe" etc.?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">This was batch nr 2905 anyway.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span> <span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Another little secret on the label on the label states that E150 was used for coloring. Not in English by the way, but in German ("Mit Farbstoff"). The German law requires this and cheers to that.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">It is bottled at 40%. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtX_4izSISCDywY3-NSmbIg70zvrO2KZj2V8ANSkO1VwW1y6xKjQ6Okupu6NQGRk_pJ3DmHecLxRkTn0BhiqYoVOf8WOj6Ez9ciYgAb9R7K-4LZvSwZvPjcUQjlNOBXJyKb0lj3lzmaBI/s1600/20150417_132918.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="207" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtX_4izSISCDywY3-NSmbIg70zvrO2KZj2V8ANSkO1VwW1y6xKjQ6Okupu6NQGRk_pJ3DmHecLxRkTn0BhiqYoVOf8WOj6Ez9ciYgAb9R7K-4LZvSwZvPjcUQjlNOBXJyKb0lj3lzmaBI/s320/20150417_132918.jpg" width="320" /> (cork is for keeping)</a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Along with this 12 YO, a 18 YO has been introduced for Travel Retail, as well as a new 21 YO in a deluxe outfit, all very affordable. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">We paid € 32 for our bottle.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Our experience</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><b>Color:</b> Amber+/tawny</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><b>Nose: </b>Nutmeg, white grapes, baked apple, creme brulee, honey. More sweetness pops up, when you let the glass rest for a while.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><b>Taste</b>: Milk chocolate (or is it Nutella? Well it sure has hazelnuts), sweet, a wiff of leather, charred oak, malty</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><b>Finish:</b> round, sweetness keeps on, becomes dry and then a wee salty liquorice kicks in in combination with some bitterness.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">It's a pleasant, easy going dram and for that price certainly worth to try, especially when your taste preference lies in the nutty corner of the spectrum. Now that sounds a bit weird, but you know what we're getting at. Glad that the people of John Dewar/Bacardi are putting much effort in this product, together with the other Last Great Malt releases. As soon as we get our hands on the other expressions, you'll find the notes on Whiskytips.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
With Iron Maiden's Alexander The Great as number one in the playlist we are tasting Craigellachie 13 yo.<br>
The Craigellachie 13 YO is a new bottling by John Dewar & Sons and introduced at the same time as the Aultmore 12 YO and a revamped Aberfeldy 12 YO as part of the Last great Malts. Glen Deveron and Royal Brackla will follow.<br>

Craiggelachie is one of the 15 distilleries in Scotland that still use (traditional) wormtubs. To be honest, we couldn't tell you what difference it makes to the spirt or end result for that matter, but according to the information on the tube it gives the whisky "a distinctive and meaty character".<br>
More importantly the label states this whisky is non-chill-filtered. No word about colouring, but maybe whisky friends in Germany of Denmark can comment on that. In these countries adding caramel must legally be displayed on the label.<br>
Another plus is the bottling strength at 46%.<br>
Together with the 13 yo a 17 YO and 23 YO Craigellachie will be released and even a 31 so we were told.<br>
First impression is good, great bottle (with embossed distillery name in the top front), great tube design.<br>
Every bottle is individually numbered.<br>
<br>
<br>
Our experience:<br>
<br>
<b>Color:</b> Deep gold<br>
<b>Nose:</b> Lemoncake, sweet grapes, pineapple, vanilla<br>
<b>Taste:</b> Honey, firm, the burned oak is there. As there is toasted bread. Anis, green tea and almond.<br>
<b>Finish:</b> Oily, a sweet-sour bitterness, cocobutter<br>
<br>
A liquid cupcake this is. We were already happy with the Aultmore, but this is even more to our liking. A thick Speysider, sweet, oily character. One to savour before dinner or two after.<br>
Hurray for the chaps at John Dewar's for releasing this expression as a single malt. And at a decent price as well. We will look out for the other expressions and have a wee taste.<br>

<br />
It looks like an old drugstore bottle with glass embossing letters. We are already thinking of good re-use for this bottle instead of throwing it away in the recycle bin. The bottle has a nice branded cap and every bottle is individually numbered.<br />
<br />
The Aultmore is released by John Dewar & Sons in a series called <a href="http://www.lastgreatmalts.com/" target="_blank">Last Great Malts of Scotland</a>. Next to Aultmore a 13 YO Craigellachie and 12 YO Aberfeldy are brought to market. Royal Brackla and Deveron will follow.<br />
Aultmore was released as an official 12 yo single malt bottling by the (previous) owners before, but the current owners are planning some more expressions next to the new 12 YO.<br />
Allthough most product of Aultmore is tankered away to Glasgow to matures and used in blends, the new packaging show John Dewar are really serious about marketing this malt. Understandable, since Aultmore is considered a Top Class malt by blenders.<br />
This Aultmore is bottled at 46%, has natural colour and no chill-filtering. Hurray from all us whisky-geeks!<br />
Off to savouring a wee dram. This is what we found:<br />

<b>Nose:</b> pineapple, vanilla, cheesed butter, citrus, sweet <br />
<b>Taste:</b> grassy as promised, barley notes, sugar, spicy, zesty, some marzipan and then vermouth comes to mind<br />
<b>Finish:</b> again sweet, medium long, dry<br />
<br />
<b>Conclusion:</b> Very happy with this effort of John Dewar's. Great to see another natural coloured whisky on the shelves. A real spicy Speysider this one. Together with the nice packaging and the decent price (we paid 41 euros) we'd quote our friend Paul: "Cannie go wrong with dat!".<br />

The city of Zwolle lies in the east of the Netherlands at 52°31′N 6°6′E. It has the reputation of being a "gourmet" city and houses several good restaurants, food places and bars.<br />
<br />
Eric Bartels of <a href="http://www.slijterijbartels.nl/" target="_blank">Slijterij Bartels</a> ("slijterij" is the Dutch word for liquor store or drink shop that is licensed to sell alcoholic beverages over 15% alcohol. Supermarkets in the Netherlands are not allowed to sell alcoholic beverages over 15%) took the initiative to bottle a cask of malt whisky for the City of Zwolle in cooperation with Dutch whisky writer Hans Offringa. One of the first bottlings, a Macallan, now has an estimated value of € 200. Other bottlings were Auchentoshan, Aberlour and Highland Park (fantastic dram).<br />
<br />
On November 9th 2014 the latest edition was launched in <a href="http://www.brasseriejansen.nl/" target="_blank">Brasserie Jansen</a>, numer 8 in line, a 15 YO Ben Nevis of 1998 vintage, single cask with an outturn of just 279 bottles, chosen by Hans Offringa. It has matured in a sherry butt, nr 1238. Label design was done by ms Laurien Stam, who also designed the other labels. Reason to introduce this expression in Brasserie was the fact that the facade of the Brasserie Jansen building is on the label.<br />
<br />
Bottle no. 1 was presented to ms Elles Hetebrij, <a href="http://www.dehetebrij.nl/" target="_blank">of a neighbouring pub</a>, who recently won an important industry prize.</span></span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">On a sunny Saturday we made our way to Brooklyn NYC coming from Manhattan. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">As real Dutchies by bicycle of course. Check out the GoPro video we made crossing the Brooklyn Bridge accompanied by music of Grandmaster Flash.</span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Going around on a bicycle in NYC is simply great. You get much better views on the city and it’s an easy town to cycle. More and more New Yorker discover the advantages of cycling. It’s fast, clean and you get a free work-out at the same time.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Our main target was Kings County Distillery located on the Brooklyn Navy Yard in the former Paymaster Building. The Brooklyn Navy Yard is located between the Brooklyn Bridge and Williamsburg bridge and looks out over Manhattan.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Kings County Distillery was founded in 2010 by Colin Spoelman and David Haskell. They are also the authors of: The Kings County Distillery Guide to Urban Moonshining: How to make and drink whiskey.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">A craft distillery, with growing potential. But they are not in a rush, as Colin stated to us. Colin guided us around the distillery; we were able to shoot some videofootage before the official tour.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Kings County Distillery offers a range of products, like bourbon and moonshine.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Their most remarkable product in our humble opinion the chocolate “flavored” whiskey. It is basically moonshine, infused with ground cacao bean husks from Mast Brothers Chocolate, whose factory is nearby.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Without exaggeration this stuff can be put right next to Cointreau or Kahlua, perfect after dinner with a cup of coffee. The bottle we bought was empty even before we left the States. That was a shame, cause this fantastic product is not yet available in the Netherlands. Understandable however, because everyone in the States wants it. Anyway, we urge Dutch importers to get their hands on a few cases, we will order 6 bottles in advance thank you.</span></span><br />
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">And Colin, please do pop over to introduce your products on one of the whisky festivals over here. We'll help you out!</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Bowmore is the oldest distillery on Islay, founded in 1779 and part of Morrison Bowmore Distillers, who are owned by Suntory.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We were lucky enough to visit the distillery in May. A video of that visit will soon follow.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Small Batch has matured on first and second fill bourbon casks.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In a video we made earlier this year you can watch the findings on Bowmore Small Batch by European Brand Ambassador Ally Dickinson.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span> <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We tried the combination with oysters and indeed it's a fine experience.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Colour</strong>:yellow gold</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Nose</strong>: grapefruit, vanilla, cereal, gooseberry, gewurztraminer, monoi de tahiti</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Taste</strong>: cremay, lightly peated, salt, pear, Spanish melon</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Finish</strong>:maritime, pleasant smokiness, medium dry</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Conclusion</strong>: A creamy, lightly smoked, fresh whisky. Certainly well suited to drink in summer time. Also good for people who are used to Speyside malts and want to get introduced to more peaty or smoky whiskies.</span><br />

<div>
<span lang=""> <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Glenglassaugh distillery has only been reopened since 2008. Before that it was mothballed from 1986 on. The distillery has been mothballed and reopened a few times earlier. The original distillery was founded in 1875. It is located is the most north eastern part of Speyside in Banffshire.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span lang=""> <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Benriach Distillery Co (also owner of Glendronach) is currently the owner of this revived distillery, which is a good thing, since these people know their trade. </span></span></div>
<div>
<span lang=""> <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A very nice book about Glenglassaugh's history, written by Ian Buxton, was published in 2010.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span lang=""> <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Three official larger expressions have been released with the new production, the Torfa is the third.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span lang=""> <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It is the first peated edition, bottled at 50%, natural colour and nonchill filtered.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span lang=""> <span style="font-family: Arial;"></span></span> </div>
<div>
<span lang=""> <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Torfa comes in an attractive packaging. A bit dark and moody, as they say on the backlabel.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span lang=""> <span style="font-family: Arial;">It's a young whisky as you might expect, bearing in mind the year of re-opening. We guess 4 years old.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span lang=""> <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One element stood out in our tasting session: the vegetable notes, both in the nose as well as in the taste.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span lang=""> <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So we grabbed a piece of Double Gloucester with onions and chives to pair this dram.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span lang=""> <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A very nice match indeed, especially with a little jam for the cheese.</span></span></div>

This new Auchentoshan is called the American Oak. It is a non age statement (NAS) Scotch whisky at 40%, with colour added. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijZoWDhkqhTTfgoeweWpU0ETIJ6DTCxJVqKyhEigBmstZiDkcT5NKKhHbKJLpywxayNZM48FagowLInbGgaiGxK8lZYa4f_46UpQY6UF20eQZaCsJqj6dl0PRyUlodV2t6zG76Xgd7uPE/s1600/20140401_143048.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijZoWDhkqhTTfgoeweWpU0ETIJ6DTCxJVqKyhEigBmstZiDkcT5NKKhHbKJLpywxayNZM48FagowLInbGgaiGxK8lZYa4f_46UpQY6UF20eQZaCsJqj6dl0PRyUlodV2t6zG76Xgd7uPE/s1600/20140401_143048.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Although these days most Scotch whisky is matured on American oak (lots of supply, relatively cheap compared to scarce sherry casks, good constant quality, good flavour), Auchentoshan (Gaelic for "corner of the field") wants to express the typical flavour that comes off the American bourbon barrels: vanilla, coconut, citrus. And it must be said these notes can absolutely be found in this dram.<br />
Now, as most malt fans know, Auchentoshan is the only Scottish malt that triple distills all its spirit. <br />
We were very lucky to attend an intimate tasting with European Brand Ambassador Alasdair Dickinson in the old town of Haarlem. We made a little videoreport:</span><br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/vABld7lgLxA" width="640"></iframe><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBCdiUxHiWsynOquAvYFTxeqZVwqNTIHtF64zfwOzAydeQ6zqV-Uc6_4181MDfnBFN2gs9CjD9xjwJlbqivYGcXAjqncUT7tc7mi4ageLndKnqhUF6YufZ1UeXa2B23OGWdXkLr9hbZE0/s1600/1396359742970.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBCdiUxHiWsynOquAvYFTxeqZVwqNTIHtF64zfwOzAydeQ6zqV-Uc6_4181MDfnBFN2gs9CjD9xjwJlbqivYGcXAjqncUT7tc7mi4ageLndKnqhUF6YufZ1UeXa2B23OGWdXkLr9hbZE0/s1600/1396359742970.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
There we could take a sip of the Auchentoshan new make spirit. Very juicy stuff indeed. Our general comment was: why don't you release this stuff for the general market? Excellent base for cocktails for example.<br />
This fruitiness comes back in the taste, in a slightly different way. The spirit is more oily, has strawberry and a malty character, after having rested in bourbon barrels for a while, the fruity flavour is more southern: peach, apricot, citrus.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong></strong></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong></strong></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Tasting notes</strong></span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Colour:</strong> deep copper</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Nose:</strong> vanilla, coconut(sunscreen), bread, marmelade, peach</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Taste:</strong> soft oak tones, creme brulee, apricot brandy, limoncello</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Finish:</strong> creamy, bit dry (on the side of the tongue)</span></li>
</ul>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Conclusion:</strong> To tell the honest truth: we were able to get hold of a bottle two months ago already. That bottle didn't last very long. It's a nice, easy going dram, with indeed some typical bourbon barrels notes in it, that go well with the triple distilled spirit of Auchentoshan. A nice entry to the Auchentoshan range. When you are in in the neighbourhood of Glasgow, do go and visit the distillery. Here you can have <a href="http://youtu.be/p6CA4BmbGTg" target="_blank">a quick peek</a>.</span><br />

It is a limited edition, number of bottles stays unclosed. Maybe better, because other brands call an edition of 22,000 limited..<br />
The label gives no age statement, alcohol is 48.7% and it's non chill filtered. So far so good. We can't help to keep looking at the bottle (nice thick bottom) and the blue colour. Bottle says: "Please open me".<br />
We cannot resist.<br />
<br />
Pouring...<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqC6Jo_Qf2_riCTz-bh5sBCpIOr35xs4PxJcwVtZyesioGX311vN26wXNpUX1ClXyfiKDspzMWoWwKUP-TYFR_Gr4AR1ag-wBrH6teQnAP0CaX3gW8PMDqtLNXKdFmDEEpKneye7uVh_Q/s1600/P1040610.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqC6Jo_Qf2_riCTz-bh5sBCpIOr35xs4PxJcwVtZyesioGX311vN26wXNpUX1ClXyfiKDspzMWoWwKUP-TYFR_Gr4AR1ag-wBrH6teQnAP0CaX3gW8PMDqtLNXKdFmDEEpKneye7uVh_Q/s1600/P1040610.JPG" height="400" width="240" /></a>Nice full colour. Although not stated on the label (you need to have an edition for the German or Danish market to be sure), we think this is natural colour.<br />
Now, Glenlivet is a huge distillery with a capacity of more than 10 million litres of pure alcohol a year. It is owned by Pernod Ricard, a French company with 19,000 people working on numerous of brands worldwide. You can imagine these people have their things well organised. It's nice to see that they have a keen eye for a niche product like this Guardians Chapters edition. They could sell bottles of vodka much easier. It is a fine example (to other global players in all kinds of markets) how you can still attract loyal followers. The introduction of the Nadurra (cask strength, no big market product, admittedly one of our favs) can be seen is in the same perspective. We would very much like to speak to the person within Pernod who is responsible for this. We would like to say to keep up the good work. And we can even say this in French. ("Bien fait, continuez s'il'vous plaît!")<br />
Stock price of Pernod is up at € 84,50. That's slightly more than the price you pay for this bottle. We'd prefer the bottle. <br />
By the way: If the stock price falls, you will lose money. If the bottle loses value, you can always drink it: a genuine whiskytip.<br />
<br />
That's a fine moment to move one to the tasting notes.<br />
<strong><span style="color: #073763;">Tasting notes</span></strong><br />
<ul>
<li><b>Color:</b> deep yellow gold</li>
<li><b>Nose:</b> complex, milk chocolate, dried fruits (plum, apricot), orange peel, sherry notes, a little bit of honey, soft oaky tones, freshly baked bread (don't ask)</li>
<li><b>Taste:</b> chocolate, spicy-peppery, honey, mandarine, some straight corn bourbon there, rhubarb (cooked with sugar), mashed and cooked apples with cinnamon (moms recipee)</li>
<li><b>Finish:</b> the case of barely corn (rub a drop on the back of your hand and smell it), medium long dry.</li>
</ul>
Conclusion: A very nice dram indeed. Complex, fruity, warm. This is made of barley, yeast and water and you can taste it. We don't give figures but we surely can advice you: go and try it out yourself.<br />

The distillery building is what you call atypical. Large part of the building was formerly used as a weavery/cotton mill, now mainly used to store casks. Some other parts were added to the building. Nothing that will startle you Frank Lloyd Wright fans, but the comic style fonts announcing that Deanston Distillery is located there made us happy enough.<br />
Deanston turned into a distillery in 1965, which makes it a relatively young distillery, even with it's almost 50 years of age.<br />
Apart from the usual mashing and still house, there a lot more to see in this distillery, for example the hydrogenerated power supply, which makes Deanston unique in Scotland.<br />
They also do their own malt grinding. Finally you get a look around in one of the warehouses.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
But seriously, this is a hands-on distillery, with a nice history, a little bit different than the others and comfortably close to Glasgow, Edinburgh and South Queensferry.<br />
Deanston is part of Burn Stewart Distillers (that also has Bunnahabhain and Tobermory in the portfolio). In 2013 South African based drinks company Distell bought Burn Stewart. <br />
<br />
At the distillery shop you can buy the core range of the Virgin Oak and the 12 year old. Especially the latter is real good value for (malt) money. That's our whiskytip and we'll do a proper tasting review another time.<br />
You can also spend some more money and buy for example the Spanish Oak version, something really special, but you have to be quick as this is a limited edition.<br />
Or fill your own bottle, which is a great souvenir.<br />
<br />
You can enjoy a great lunch at the Coffee Bothy right next to the shop.<br />
<br />
All in all we can certainly recommend a visit to this distillery. If you have already been there, share your thoughts on this page or on our <a href="http://www.facwebook.com/whiskytips" target="_blank">Facebookpage.</a><br />

Shame on us, because this was already the forth edition of the festival.<br />

Only a month before we met Wullie MacMorland, owner of the <a href="http://www.schotsrestauranthielander.nl/">Hielander Restaurant </a>.<br />
Even though his restaurant was closed at the time we visited, he very kindly showed us around.<br />
We thought it would only be polite to visit the festival that was initiated by Wullie together with Ebbo Voorhout of the Grand Church in Alkmaar.<br />

It has a lot of well reserved typical Dutch houses and of course a few canals. Alkmaar, a mere 40 km north of Amsterdam, is most famous for it's traditional cheesemarket.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKwXZKKQ-GEDUj5L6OvcS0FjIerMsi1lkrjQdDIsfbRfdwIHTIlhnrwznuEWOqcbHcU3uO_crl2VHkeAd-B86_RrsNvW-ZN_89iOPJOpdJpkHhl986sZLpmGiZBd3VOnc7ma2Gng63gMs/s1600/DSC03865.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKwXZKKQ-GEDUj5L6OvcS0FjIerMsi1lkrjQdDIsfbRfdwIHTIlhnrwznuEWOqcbHcU3uO_crl2VHkeAd-B86_RrsNvW-ZN_89iOPJOpdJpkHhl986sZLpmGiZBd3VOnc7ma2Gng63gMs/s320/DSC03865.JPG" /></a></div>Like many other whisky festivals in the Netherlands, the venue is located in a church. We're not sure if this says more about religion in the Netherlands or devotion to whisky. Anyway, the place is well located and the church, with it's 500+ age, is really grand. And luckily warm enough too.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4UmCFbddtDNhFwev2oTdGuD4kMhDDfyjPWkzc2tVrxstaPAas9_ruSpiG9HmNpE9aMC3ouULyjfArUb1gOl5FtkgacsP7b4JIm7xkTjvc1tfG43p5HeGmXSayMI6M8ij2KnlpEGjc7W0/s1600/DSC03830.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4UmCFbddtDNhFwev2oTdGuD4kMhDDfyjPWkzc2tVrxstaPAas9_ruSpiG9HmNpE9aMC3ouULyjfArUb1gOl5FtkgacsP7b4JIm7xkTjvc1tfG43p5HeGmXSayMI6M8ij2KnlpEGjc7W0/s320/DSC03830.JPG" /></a></div>A nice mix of market house and independent bottlings, old and new expressions, there's something for the starting whiskydrinker as well as for the more experienced connoisseur. Especially nice about this festival is that the organisation has made a level playing field in terms of space and promotion. Every participant gets a plain table, same size for everyone, be it Diageo or Kintra.<br />
Most entry levels drams are free to try, using your complimentary Hieland 2014 Glencairn nosing glass, for others there's an extra fee.<br />
Having visited several (...) festivals before, we are always looking for those hiddens gems at a festival. First one was a Mosstowie 1979, bottled by Dutch firm Van Wees, in their Ultimate Selection (already over 500 different bottlings!).<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4U0Pavzf2kEecI7K_E6QpBOqqQ1a26Q9kJcNNKocu_i4AjNsgGGLsOoRGBWf4yWRmhyGgTkFvIH3kR5ib7G-8XPSONq1mfAGqkonQDH5gpzsnLwUa0FJssZqC6AEcFtSjQYGYZZLBZ4E/s1600/20140215_205604.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4U0Pavzf2kEecI7K_E6QpBOqqQ1a26Q9kJcNNKocu_i4AjNsgGGLsOoRGBWf4yWRmhyGgTkFvIH3kR5ib7G-8XPSONq1mfAGqkonQDH5gpzsnLwUa0FJssZqC6AEcFtSjQYGYZZLBZ4E/s320/20140215_205604.jpg" /></a></div>A subtle Speyside whisky, produced with Lomond stills. Mosstowie was never a distillery of itself, it was produced within the Miltonduff distillery. This is typically a whisky that developes in the glass. It started floral, a bit of straw and after 10 minutes or so the mint appeares. Amazing indeed.<br />
Another great dram was the Mannochmore 1984, bottled in 1997 by Gordon and MacPhails, you know that family owned business that has the most beautiful casks filled with great malt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3silQX2FTyr6W4ns4DZhJNRlC_eMdeUw0EdQ-hLxqvQxSn3d6AB3GHE3sPpz46WAUFZZvqqs-YW4AYuT2IV8MNDNm-SRYV6vOz2v6Qd7v5JOwk2-r_Gld1wPmU_OxzmvJn21BbUqkquM/s1600/DSC03877.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3silQX2FTyr6W4ns4DZhJNRlC_eMdeUw0EdQ-hLxqvQxSn3d6AB3GHE3sPpz46WAUFZZvqqs-YW4AYuT2IV8MNDNm-SRYV6vOz2v6Qd7v5JOwk2-r_Gld1wPmU_OxzmvJn21BbUqkquM/s320/DSC03877.JPG" /></a></div>Mannochmore is often overlooked, as it is a workhorse for many Diageo blends and a relatively young distillery. Well can we bring forward that the age of a distillery is no guarantee for a good malt? Mannochmore proves the opposite. Maybe we shouldn't promote Mannochmore that much, but hey,they might be looking for a brand ambassador in the future..<br />
Another very nice dram we enjoyed is the Benromach Origins Batch no. 4, matured in Port pipes. Benromach seems to have found a nice balance between the wine and the whisky. If you don't believe us, try the latest Benromach Sassicaia finish.<br />

This whisky has a label with a dog carrying a small barrel around his neck that supposedly contains an alcoholic liquid.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5eUDKL36t-5VoyP8nY-u5GYWDuzNWxxSvluT_Uj15qYSRfHoFiSZ6LvhH7VtnwsQgwXYq-55QTwc5ZHFMzI4pmOGAio6hSvf0EuMb5AAezLKzvLAgEkO0f-tO_U2NbrCnx2xNgIS9Bgw/s1600/1389478001560.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5eUDKL36t-5VoyP8nY-u5GYWDuzNWxxSvluT_Uj15qYSRfHoFiSZ6LvhH7VtnwsQgwXYq-55QTwc5ZHFMzI4pmOGAio6hSvf0EuMb5AAezLKzvLAgEkO0f-tO_U2NbrCnx2xNgIS9Bgw/s200/1389478001560.jpg" /></a><br />
<i>What's the history and the purpose?</i><br />
Well, according to the leaflet this whisky is a hommage to (ancestors of) the St Bernard dogs that rescued people in the Alps.<br />
First records go back to 1707.<br />
Allthough we know now that the last thing you should do is providing alcohol to a hypothermic person (the veins will open up and loose even more body warmth), back in those days it was considered the obvious thing to do.<br />
People of The Whisky Specialist claimed to have found the drink as it was in the old days in a small Swiss village. The recipe was kept a secret, but with experimenting and blending they have tried to somehow recreate the taste of the old drink that used to be in the barrel carried by the rescue dogs.<br />
So on the label you will find a Berner Sennen dog, named Balou (this specific race was probably more likely the type of rescue dog in the old days) with a small cask.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJlzqgB5zgjQBd5fKTorGTvRP0fYS6Z6WdUsuNfwGSUrm2p70RdipQAcIGns7fYv3xDE9WWNSdnJ-MBNFf-aYI_tLncK3U-MVqadxDPiaZm3O6lAq1ltiK9tiBfC-DQ7PHoNvvXw0BFmk/s1600/P1030826.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJlzqgB5zgjQBd5fKTorGTvRP0fYS6Z6WdUsuNfwGSUrm2p70RdipQAcIGns7fYv3xDE9WWNSdnJ-MBNFf-aYI_tLncK3U-MVqadxDPiaZm3O6lAq1ltiK9tiBfC-DQ7PHoNvvXw0BFmk/s320/P1030826.JPG" /></a><br />
That a great story of course.<br />
But what's in the blend? The man in the shop only revealed that it's a blend of malt whiskies. If we were to guess we'd say Mortlach (spicy), Glen Grant (butter, vanilla) and a wee drop of Benromach Burgundy Finish (smoke, dry, wine tones).<br />
More important: how does it taste?<br />
Well, it's a real spicy dram, very nice for winter time. There's a hint of (Spanish or Portugese) wine there, that oaky, dry taste.<br />
<br />
<b>Whiskytips tasting notes</b><br />

Only the Governor of the Commonwealth has the authority to appoint a Kentucky Colonel. The actual certificate, by law, is issued by the Kentucky Secretary of State. There is a formal nomination process.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhnMg7U4vrPGL6sxJN7s5eTz5N3HDg0kHDffBnSET0NF5KLfUR3evRBPKBixM_5UScoDoGbMuiXjpfkAfid98FCtyCHyTL_uXNULehnuu6bwBwkPqhmjOF__PulQ5fxogXOcgDSGClg5I/s1600/document+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhnMg7U4vrPGL6sxJN7s5eTz5N3HDg0kHDffBnSET0NF5KLfUR3evRBPKBixM_5UScoDoGbMuiXjpfkAfid98FCtyCHyTL_uXNULehnuu6bwBwkPqhmjOF__PulQ5fxogXOcgDSGClg5I/s320/document+001.JPG" /></a><br />
Hans Offringa was nominated for this title by the Kentucky Distillers Association, based upon his book "Bourbon and Blues" that was published in English and Dutch.<br />
Offringa and his wife Becky currently live in Zwolle, the Netherlands, a city which boast a three star Michelin restaurant as well as its own whisky label (casks picked by Offringa).<br />

Venue is the Grand Church in the center of The Hague.<br />
The Hague is a somewhat awkward city: it is the place where the Dutch Parliament resides, along with the Ministries, the King and Queen live there, but it's not the capital of the Netherlands.<br />
As we did for previous editions we made a videoreport. Most of the scenes were shot on the Friday afternoon, which is a special VIP session, with less people around.<br />
Other scenes were taken on the Sunday afternoon, That's the day that you can encounter most whisky specialized retailers.<br />
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/QqUKS3_JaEs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe><br />
<br />
The festival had numerous masterclasses for beginners as well as for the more experienced connoisseur. In the videoreport you can see an impression of the masterclass by Whiskybase, a company based in Rotterdam, with a virtual and a real life shop.<br />
<br />
<b>Dutch Whisky Awards 2013</b><br />
During the festival, the Dutch Whisky Awards 2013 were presented.<br />
These were the winners:<br />
Best peated single malt Scotch: <i>Laphroaig Triple Wood<br />
</i>Best unpeated single malt Scotch: <i>The Balvenie 14 years old Caribbean Cask</i><br />
Best Blended Whisky: <i>The Naked Grouse</i><br />
Best non Scotch whisky: <i>King Car Whisky</i><br />

<br />
<b>Whisky Master of the Year Competition</b><br />
Another competition is the Dutch Whisky Master of the year.<br />
Victory went to <i>Matthijs Hakfoort</i>, for the highest score on the theory questions, but most of all because of a full score on the blind tasting test. Well done Matthijs!<br />
With his first place he won a trip to the Orkney Islands with a trip to Highland Park included. One can only be jealous.<br />
<br />
<b>Whisky documentary</b><br />
Then there is <i>Gwen Jansen</i>, a filmmaker who is currently preparing for a documentary on the whisky scene in the Netherlands. She is raising money through crowdfunding. By the end of December she will decide on the go/no go, but things are looking well. You can find more info on her website <a href="http://www.nederlandwhiskyland.nl">www.nederlandwhiskyland.nl</a>.<br />

<b>Festival bottlings</b><br />
This year's festival bottling were two peated cask strength Arran's, from two seperate casks. We didn't taste it yet, but hopefully we will in the near future. We got some very positive comments from others.<br />

Two things are good about these local tastings: they provide an excellent opportunity for the starting whisky connoisseur to explore new varieties and, very important in Holland, you can get there on your bicycle...<br />
<br />
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/R-LkxsSFJic" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe><br />
<br />
For the more experienced whiskydrinker there's a masterclass to enlarge the whisky knowledge.<br />
Some new bottlings can also be tasted like the Bruichladdich Scottish Barley. We tried it and it's got the typical warm, malty Bruichladdich style with that hint of mint.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5BK1fichPOKUgqPxPPPYGLinUnDj57nqOCuI9lfKBZu9lYHMeBrPtZHCjjMVOevuAcdqXA4vRtt8GJSa99vpcPiazlSvfGxcN2OIJr5FhWXQkm0cl-SyKCXKMI3msWPmMC-ldx6UmtnQ/s1600/20131020_154703.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5BK1fichPOKUgqPxPPPYGLinUnDj57nqOCuI9lfKBZu9lYHMeBrPtZHCjjMVOevuAcdqXA4vRtt8GJSa99vpcPiazlSvfGxcN2OIJr5FhWXQkm0cl-SyKCXKMI3msWPmMC-ldx6UmtnQ/s320/20131020_154703.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Allthough we thought upfront that this would be a quite straightforward pour-and-drink event it proved to be much more, as you can see in <a href="http://youtu.be/R-LkxsSFJic">the videoreport </a>we made.<br />
Whisky-related clothes, Scottish food and beverages (Irn-Bru), books and our friends from <a href="http://www.whiskyetc.nl/">Whiskyetc magazine </a>were there.<br />
So we left the Xperience with a great pair of Highland Park cufflings and a 1000 page book by Dominic Roskrow (1001 whiskies you must try before you die).<br />

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IJmuiden">IJmuiden is a small harbour city</a>, on the westside of Amsterdam.<br />
It's (Dutch) fame derives from the big steel factory, now owned bij Tata. The steel factory can be seen from far away.<br />
IJmuiden also has a yearly Whisky and Rum festival, located directly near the sea.<br />
The festival is organised by <a href="http://www.zeewijck.nl/">'Slijterij en Wijnhuis Zeewijck'</a>.<br />
<br />
Here you can watch the videoreport we made.<br />
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Co6L4BMl8Jg?list=UUW3rjrhNuaVg0b_xL-HpqAQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe><br />
<br />
A few facts make this festival different to other festivals.<br />
First there's the strong accent on rum. During this festival the Dutch Rum Awards are presented.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFNkYQDbA3NpN7XpgauY-OXqx9BgBSzkO10kChWGUqudAfSs1qthD23fXLq8kAoezMMoRCptiUD80JW2Bxe4MZ2GqN2uA_qcCDWgll3YCad7Qu094Hp24_ps4XlS_ZP4AHS_BcASRni6A/s1600/P1030158.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFNkYQDbA3NpN7XpgauY-OXqx9BgBSzkO10kChWGUqudAfSs1qthD23fXLq8kAoezMMoRCptiUD80JW2Bxe4MZ2GqN2uA_qcCDWgll3YCad7Qu094Hp24_ps4XlS_ZP4AHS_BcASRni6A/s320/P1030158.JPG" /></a><br />
Secondly the festival has a few distinguished guests, namely the Cuban Ambassador to the Kingdom of the <br />
Netherlands Ms. Zelmys María Domínguez Cortina, the Mayor of Velsen (the municipality that includes IJmuiden)mr Franc Weerwind who is accompanied by the deputy mayor Arjen Verkaik.<br />
Great thing is that they stayed at the festival after the official part and took time the visit several stalls and brands<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjsCkObDd2cKSMeXGHzTasMeYuTC7msbN0rYqhsQ6unfCaRnQbgoQPRYrrfjVhJC8B2wq8lLzm1gLuPF42WQTmJc4Ty9NAC8h9s-G4XwHifYkXaZHO8Z6HjuSKVTEoSddIK8fhQYc-_3E/s1600/P1030257.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjsCkObDd2cKSMeXGHzTasMeYuTC7msbN0rYqhsQ6unfCaRnQbgoQPRYrrfjVhJC8B2wq8lLzm1gLuPF42WQTmJc4Ty9NAC8h9s-G4XwHifYkXaZHO8Z6HjuSKVTEoSddIK8fhQYc-_3E/s320/P1030257.JPG" /></a><br />
(Brand toolkit of The Macallan)<br />
<br />
During this festival you can taste different kind of rum and whisky, but there a nice variety of food as well. Dutch law sadly prohibits the sale of alcohol in bottles but fortunately you can spend your money on other stuff. For example you will find the people of <a href="http://www.verspuy.nl/">Verspuy Interieur</a>, who sell some nice whisky related gadgets, like the whiskychair (as seen in the video).<br />
There's whisky writer Hans Offringa with his wife Becky, with his wide range of books, that he is happy to sign for you. Or a nice (cuban) cigar you can smoke on the adjacent terrace.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgquUwfQoxmrhhoKxGcs3HlyIlfQ1_LIW8CgymACiTBtbuyJsd8Ynk2-id9cHWAYIFyynp0qxmeo_UeMd8Dc7uxp7nXnR0b-seaq5J6P89qkYUQuy_B_lFDkDqkiX68rBUdkCMaBpUnSVY/s1600/P1030251.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgquUwfQoxmrhhoKxGcs3HlyIlfQ1_LIW8CgymACiTBtbuyJsd8Ynk2-id9cHWAYIFyynp0qxmeo_UeMd8Dc7uxp7nXnR0b-seaq5J6P89qkYUQuy_B_lFDkDqkiX68rBUdkCMaBpUnSVY/s320/P1030251.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
The festival takes place on the top floor of the Holiday in. So after the afternoon session you can take a long walk on the beach and if you visit the evening session you can take the elevator straight to your room.<br />
<br />
Check out <a href="http://www.whiskyenrumaanzee.nl/">the website </a>for next year's edition of the festival (11th October), it's worth a visit.<br />

Just last June we celebrated the 50th anniversary of mr Han van Wees in the whisky business. You can read <a href="http://whiskytips.blogspot.nl/2013/06/celebrating-50-years-han-van-wees-in.html">our blog about that event here</a>.<br />
Whiskytips was @ the Potstill do make a video report, as we did on two previous occasions.<br />
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/UZ8cv1kdE3c" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe><br />
Nice element in this festival is the combination of Scotch whisky, whisk(e)y from other countries, bourbon, rye and other distillates, like armagnac, calavados and jenever.<br />
First year we went, we only concentrated on nosing and tasting whisky, which is basically a shame, because you're missing out on a lot of other nice flavours and experiences.<br />
<br />
This year's edition also had a special limited festival bottling, a 10 YO Glenfarclas, that will become a collectable in the near future for sure. And if not, it's a great dram, we tried it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLu-vJXoDy05dguV8vWJRw91XYbwq7GYmK3e8C4yQd8YHkiv07a7iZLbJn0WRwQlNhbyjX5tWmCgX6JSqpTWADFTLpy_Slwzb-wxA6RBCN1HciZUC9V3_OVYaNzPPuGSb_c3vrG6zOstw/s1600/P1030014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLu-vJXoDy05dguV8vWJRw91XYbwq7GYmK3e8C4yQd8YHkiv07a7iZLbJn0WRwQlNhbyjX5tWmCgX6JSqpTWADFTLpy_Slwzb-wxA6RBCN1HciZUC9V3_OVYaNzPPuGSb_c3vrG6zOstw/s320/P1030014.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Another nice aspect of the festival is the Treasure room. For €20 extra you get the chance to taste rare, often independent bottlings, that are long gone in most cases. What to think about a Rosebank of Macduff 1969? A good deal we think.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile moviemaker Gwen Jansen was filming for her upcoming documentary "Nederland Whiskyland", that covers all aspects of the whisky scene in the Netherlands, with its festivals, clubs, restaurants, shops etc. It is a crowfunded documentary and everyone can particpate in this unique film. Just check <a href="http://www.nederlandwhiskyland.nl">www.nederlandwhiskyland.nl</a>. (It's in Dutch, but Google will help)<br />
<br />
Whiskywriter Robin Brilleman was there to sign his book. In the Netherlands law prohibits the sale of alcohol during events like these (how we envie our more liberal neighbour countries), but you can sell books, so luckily there was some money to be spent.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhatBOIPUoD3Grt8tO9B6l7rMv-W4877u0TpDa_qNk_AGc7RKVavmdr45eSKhZkejWqwF61KdYcRvLBFc9kkBuSf6U2btemJcfSk1Q0K_t-t8G8tbEpEiYakZJlny8-P6WxF9a7K3m-4do/s1600/20131005_185422.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhatBOIPUoD3Grt8tO9B6l7rMv-W4877u0TpDa_qNk_AGc7RKVavmdr45eSKhZkejWqwF61KdYcRvLBFc9kkBuSf6U2btemJcfSk1Q0K_t-t8G8tbEpEiYakZJlny8-P6WxF9a7K3m-4do/s320/20131005_185422.JPG" /></a></div>The Potstill Festival has good connections to some of the brands (not surprisingly also imported by Van Wees), which gives room to new introductions or at least the news about it. <br />
This way we could learn that Arran will be releasing a limited Milennium Cask Bottling and Benromach will do another Sassicaia Finish soon. We can't wait!<br />
Right after the afternoon session people rushed to the retail store of Van Wees in Amersfoort to get a bottle of whisky they just tasted.<br />
A short impression can be found here.<br />
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Nian_ygvzqc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe><br />
Our winner of the festival was the Balmenach 1988 24 YO, cask 2794 bottled by Signatory at cask strength.<br />
The bottle should retail for around €85-€90.<br />
Our happiness was even greater when we found out that Van Wees have bottled a second cask of Balmenach, cask 2795 (also cask strength), for roughly the same price, in their own range, the Ultimate. <br />
The warm flavours just keep popping up and you're used to winter time straight away.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLNFYq3UCh1wK855xp4uJk0D5Xxlt0Ojp-_guvYY0IrKQISvavbsyxKxfBlOLwlZALvtepF7QNjZUZf4GTzdsPoApUU2tQH0fpQ-_SLitfUAEW4pfJDlP6wbsK89zXg8xPI8pPRTd_n8w/s1600/P1020994-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLNFYq3UCh1wK855xp4uJk0D5Xxlt0Ojp-_guvYY0IrKQISvavbsyxKxfBlOLwlZALvtepF7QNjZUZf4GTzdsPoApUU2tQH0fpQ-_SLitfUAEW4pfJDlP6wbsK89zXg8xPI8pPRTd_n8w/s320/P1020994-001.JPG" /></a><br />
Concluding remarks: great festival, lots of different drinks to be tasted, gives the opportunity to look beyond your whiskyfrontiers and sharpen yer tastebuds, not too big and commercial; let's hope it will stay that way. See you at the 12th edition next year and look out for the Wallace tartan.<br />

This is the first release to be (specifically) matured in sherry wood, at the same time a bourbon matured version was released.<br />
Glengyle is a distillery in Campeltown, originally built in 1872. Already in 1925 Glengyle was closed for a period of 75 years. After being acquired by the owner of Springbank in 2000, the distillery restarted production in 2004.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJYgJpb8rQdqa-nRNIQZOdRoGuoHrUygHHPwtX1shCMZR4pyt67CfIUxWFA7VGhVJfyXL8qtRXo1ZEwbTNobETN9SsVi93CpLyWbCQHKprbg26FFmhZnukfzjED6DGRr7Tu3AD3mUfIRw/s1600/20130908_231750.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJYgJpb8rQdqa-nRNIQZOdRoGuoHrUygHHPwtX1shCMZR4pyt67CfIUxWFA7VGhVJfyXL8qtRXo1ZEwbTNobETN9SsVi93CpLyWbCQHKprbg26FFmhZnukfzjED6DGRr7Tu3AD3mUfIRw/s320/20130908_231750.jpg" /></a></div>In 2007 a first limited 3 year old was released, subtitled "Work In Progress". Meanwhile, apart from the Sherry and Bourbon Woods, four Works In Progress have been released so far.<br />
<br />
Another noticeable thing to mention is that Glengyle uses the stills, spirit safe and spirit receivers of the now closed Ben Wyvis distillery (ever tasted Ben Wyvis? We salute you!). This alone is a good reason to buy a bottle of Kilkerran..<br />
By the way, the whisky is not named after the distillery because Glengyle was already in use for a blended malt by Loch Lomond. <br />
Of course this whisky is non chill filtered and has natural colour. <br />
Add a drop of water, swirl gently and enhance your nosing and tasting experience. The water is from Crosshill Loch. They also try to use as much local barley as possible. The malting is done at the neighbouring distillery of Springbank.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Whiskytips tasting notes:<br />
</b><b>Coulour:</b> Orange gold<br />
<b>Nose:</b> Nutmeg, gingerspices, walnut, orange peels, chocolate<br />
<b>Taste:</b> Sweet (even some dark sugar when water is added), hazelnut chocolate, honey, slightly bitter (wine tannines?), gingerwine, grapefruit<br />
<b>Finish:</b> Tannines again, taste still develops, medium dry and now some (charred) wood appears.<br />
<br />
<b>Concluding remarks</b><br />
Allthough this Kilkerran release is also called Work In Progress and the whisky has the young, quite fierce character, at the same time there's already a wonderful nose and oily feeling to this malt. This makes it an very interesting experience, to see how Kilkerran will develop over the years into the optimal flavoursetting, while keeping in mind the very capable people of Springbank are involved.<br />

Benromach was founded back in 1898 by Duncan MacCallum and F.W. Brickman.<br />
The distillery has an on and off history of production (as many other distilleries by the way). The own floor maltings stopped in 1968 and in 1983 the distillery was closed and dismantled.<br />
Fortunately independent bottlers Gordon and MacPhail (one off the largest, if not the largest in Scotland) saw this as an opportunity for a constant supply of their own malt whisky not far from their head office in Elgin. They decided to buy Benromach in 1993 from United Distillers (Diageo). After this, other independent bottlers followed them by buying (Signatory) or building a distillery (Adelphi).<br />
All new equipment was installed (except for the spirit safe that came from Millburn distillery) and the refurbished distillery was officially opened in 1995 by Prince Charles. <br />
The first bottling from the new production was released in 2004.<br />
Story goes that after going back into production, United Distillers gave Benromach a box of new-make samples from before closure and the spirit character turned out to be quite identical. Only the water was the same.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivzA9oXXaNafpIGsCK33_mxzAnmMxlB8xoyfeIkg-BcfQ86Tc5OWB0drSdDA7qBNAWTCtO8pllbG5UXliwDWMwZykUeUp7KNuY9zZivh4ashwjua0ojjX8mE3c17tSfuwNOED0xZ09KLE/s1600/DSCF5958.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivzA9oXXaNafpIGsCK33_mxzAnmMxlB8xoyfeIkg-BcfQ86Tc5OWB0drSdDA7qBNAWTCtO8pllbG5UXliwDWMwZykUeUp7KNuY9zZivh4ashwjua0ojjX8mE3c17tSfuwNOED0xZ09KLE/s320/DSCF5958.JPG" /></a></div>Although Benromach doesn’t do its own floor maltings anymore, it’s still a handcrafted whisky, being produced by only two men. The measuring of the volume of the casks after filling for example is done with the old gross and tare system (Weighing the casks before filling) instead of using automatic gauges.<br />
The yearly capacity of Benromach is 500,000 litres of alcohol per year, but in 2012 less than 150,000 litres were produced, making Benromach the smallest working distillery in Speyside. The distillery also has a visitor centre awarded four stars by the Scottish Tourist Board.<br />
The good news is that more and more people worldwide are picking up this small batch malt whisky (most of the production is marketed as single malt), so Gordon and MacPhail decided to double production and an extra employee will be added to the current staff.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAnab75emUAKR8p5R_dlACKL19RwrDsG7s-DJO7pFiNcHZX4cPHBroQDHQiVePG2j000JNZu0HfyiZD93wkP-Elokyo1Eez_Ev2K__U3Z_I0pzq5bGfqQ6vI9sfYuTZ3tqAOXNusrhlfw/s1600/P1010179.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAnab75emUAKR8p5R_dlACKL19RwrDsG7s-DJO7pFiNcHZX4cPHBroQDHQiVePG2j000JNZu0HfyiZD93wkP-Elokyo1Eez_Ev2K__U3Z_I0pzq5bGfqQ6vI9sfYuTZ3tqAOXNusrhlfw/s320/P1010179.JPG" /></a></div>After this introduction we finally come the tasting notes of this Benromach Port Wood Finish expression.<br />
Benromach has done more Port Wood Finishes, this one is distilled in 2000 and bottled in 2012. It was finished for a period of 8 (!) year in Port Casks. Now this raises the question what is the definition of a finish. Maybe the Scottish Whisky Association could step in.<br />
The whisky is bottled at 45% ABV strength. Just 1460 bottles were released in this batch.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc-Df_slUYudYe2R0ifzureGT9tarXFSRRvKpcL5LSlT19F3mZAeg4L5zIIhy71vOEO9WnQgv75WFNUoM8dc9XkEWuTfcYantq0ovu1PK_BLkxak0Zb-wsOWonaHAlXwnbAt5xCYdQrnw/s1600/1372016227246.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc-Df_slUYudYe2R0ifzureGT9tarXFSRRvKpcL5LSlT19F3mZAeg4L5zIIhy71vOEO9WnQgv75WFNUoM8dc9XkEWuTfcYantq0ovu1PK_BLkxak0Zb-wsOWonaHAlXwnbAt5xCYdQrnw/s320/1372016227246.jpg" /></a></div><b>Tasting notes</b><br />
Nose: soft sweet wine notes (the port is there allright), dried plum, pineapple/coconut (tropical), ashy, smoky <br />
Taste: wine, sweet (with added water even sugarlike), plums again, red fruit jam, smoke, tannins, clove<br />
Finish: wite pepper, medium dry, slightly bitter, warming<br />
<br />
Concluding remarks: Benromach fans as we are, we tend to be a bit biased, but this is definitely one of the better port wood finished whiskies. Some port wood finishes simply to have too much of the port character and this one goes very well with the smoky/ashy tones that characterizes Benromach so much. Be quick to get a bottle though, since there are only 1460 (-1..) around.<br />

Today over 100 whiskylovers gathered in Amersfoort to celebrate the 50th anniversary of mr Han van Wees in the spirit and whisky-business.<br />
Amersfoort is a city in the heart of the Netherlands and home to the family run business of Van Wees which was founded in 1921.<br />
Van Wees opened up the Dutch market for good quality whisky. A very nice story is the one about a ship with blended whisky, that had sunk in Dutch waters. Van Wees bought the whisky and it proved to be A-quality scotch, intended for the South American market. Since the Dutch had to deal with lesser quality (A- quality went to dollar countries in those days), these bottles sold like hotcakes. However, the importer and producer were not happy with this lot being on the market and bought it back from Van Wees, who made a profitable deal.<br />

Van Wees was also the first company to import Glenfarclas, Springbank and Macallan. They also have very good ties with Gordon and MacPhail, one if not the largest independent bottler in Scotland.<br />
Apart from this, Van Wees releases its own brand of independent bottlings, <a href="http://www.ultimatewhisky.com/index.htm">the Utimate Collection</a>. Most of these bottlings are single cask, for a very good price.<br />
The afternoon was divided in two parts.<br />
The first part kicked off with a nice calvados. Meanwhile mr Van Wees lectured the audience, not only on the history of Van Wees but also on the spirits, that were tasted blindly. So we learned that calvados is not only made from apple, but also from pear.<br />
Some more great spirits from France followed, with an 1972 Armagnac Domaine Boingneres as our personal favourite.<br />
The line up was closed by a 21 YO Whyte and Mackays blended Scotch, which was simply marvellous and a good bridge to the things to come.<br />

Mr Van Wees is never afraid to say the things as he sees them so he wholeheartedly shared his opinion on whisky blends. For him A-quality blends from the sixties are better than most single malts these days.<br />
After lunch we proceeded bravely first with a 1963 Glen Grant bottled by Gordon and Macphail. Now, there is one thing when drinking whisky of such provenance: it gets hard to appreciate a lot of other stuff that’s around, your taste gets somewhat spoiled..<br />
In our case we got spoiled even more, since the second one was a Tamdhu 1962.<br />
Mr Van Wees picked these bottlings because he is convinced that coal fired distilleries, as most of them were in these days, make better whisky than the present steam fired boilers.<br />
So we moved one to another jewel from the sixties, the Strathisla 1964, again a Gordon and Macphail bottling.<br />
Fourth sample was a Glen Avon 1961 apparently produced by Glen Farclas.<br />
After savouring this magnificent dram we tasted the Glen Elgin 1968. Last one was (we thought) a sherried 32 YO Tobermory, a whisky with it’s own definite character.<br />
Then came the surprise malt… a 16 YO Port Ellen, by <a href="http://www.ultimatewhisky.com/bottling_history.htm">the Ultimate</a>, one of their own bottlings. Almost impossible to find these days, and if so, only for big money.<br />

This treat was definitely a worthy closure of this memorable day.<br />
We can only hope that the stories mr Van Wees has told and probably many more will be put to paper someday. We did hear that plans are made to make a documentary on the whiskyworld, with mr Van Wees and the Van Wees company with a prominent role in it.<br />
We will keep you posted!<br />
